Histological observations on the oocyte development in the Picnic seabream, Acanthopagrus berda (Forsskål 1775)

Histological analysis was carried out on ovarian development in the picnic seabream, Acanthopagrus berda (Forsskål 1775) caught estuarine waters of Calicut, Kerala, India from January to December 2016. Four developmental phases oocyte were identified viz., oogonia proliferation and transformation into primary oocyte, growth phase, secondary phase maturation these are similar those described for other species. The reproductive process begins a very young ovary with formation oogonia, cells originally derived special primordial germ formed early embryonic development; their multiplication differentiation followed by release mature oocytes. Oocyte stages observed A. chromatin nucleolus, perinucleolar, late lipid vesicle stage I II yolk granule stage, tertiary hydrated atretic oocyte. oocytes entered when they attained maximum size 459.6±71.83 µm. examination ovaries showed presence all different an asynchronous mode shortly before spawning, indicating that species is multiple spawner.
